An adventurous young man decided to go for a paddle in a kayak on the partially thawed Schroon Lake. It wasn’t long before he found himself completely iced in and unable to get back into clear water. A brave young woman quickly put in a jon boat and grabbed an axe to paddle out to free him, only to find herself also trapped in ice. Shortly after 10:30 a.m. a 911 call and the Horicon Volunteer Fire Department Water Rescue Team arrived, quickly launching an airboat equipped with a hoist for the cold water/ice rescue. The air boat operator deftly traveled over water and ice to get to the stranded individuals. They quickly pulled the paddlers on board and hoisted the kayak and jon boat onto the deck for a safe ride to shore. We are grateful to our skilled volunteers and the many hours they spend training for a multitude of would-be rescue situations here in the Schroon Lake region.
