Publicity:  Sally reported that she would like to put an ad for ESSLA membership in the Adirondack Journal and the Times of Ti.  Jane made a motion that Sally could spend $224 to submit the ad to both papers twice.  Anne seconded the motion and it carried.  The board asked Sally to explore the cost of advertising in the Post Star as well.  Vince moved that Sally could spend up to $100 to advertise in the Post Star.  Rich seconded it and the motion carried.

Fundraising:  Anne reported that the pasta dinner will be Sunday, June 5th at the Point of Pines in Brant Lake.  Anne has made a flyer to help with advertising the event.  ESSLA made a profit of $6,365.80 on the calendars.  The remaining calendars will be offered at $3 each.  The wind shirts will be selling for $15 each.  The committee is looking into making and selling note cards with photos of Schroon  Lake on them.

Old Business:  1) Jane reported that one lake steward has been approved to work Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays throughout the summer. She is trying to get a second steward trained to work on the long weekends.  The stewards will be trained at Paul Smith’s.  Horicon is paying for the training and salaries.  ESSLA is paying for the uniform shirts and a trac phone, if needed.  2) Jane reported that the floating classroom at Lake George has been reserved for ESSLA on July 29th at 10AM . Although 25-27 children is optimal, up to 30 children may attend.  They will learn about glaciers and lakes and how to protect our waters.  The children will do experiments using nets and microscopes.  ESSLA will pay $150 for the program and parents will be responsible for transportation.  Insurance will be covered by the Lake George Association.  3) Bill has contacted the Darian Fresh Water Institute.  This institute will do our biological testing.  About 10 locations will be tested this year for fecal count and a different 10 will be tested next year.  In addition, a few locations will be tested for phosphorus.  Jane made a motion to allocate $250 for this testing.  Rich seconded it and the motion carried.  4) Bill mentioned that the NYSFOLA Conference is this weekend.  Bill and Vince will attend on Friday and Saturday.  Jane plans to attend on Saturday.   5) Students at the North Warren School worked on a logo for ESSLA through the art department.  Board members selected the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners.  The winning logo has been modified and digitized and will be on the lake steward shirts.  6) Kim is working on the Schroon River markings.  7)  Jane reported that she is working on flyers for the Memorial weekend home owners’ association meetings.   8) The Schroon Lake Association is celebrating its 100 years.  After some discussion,  it was agreed that Bill would send a letter of congratulations and a small gift.   Jane made a motion that Bill could spend up to $50, Sally seconded it and the motion passed.  9) Bill reported that the paperwork has been submitted to International Paper for a grant to support our educational endeavors.  We will hear if it is approved by mid-May.

New Business:  1)  Horicon Day will be Saturday, August 6th with August 7th as a rain date.  There will be food booths, crafts, games, and fireworks.  ESSLA will have a booth with a river model to show the impact that rivers have on the lakes. We are hoping to work with the Brant Lake Association.  Jane suggested perhaps “Milfoil Man” could make an appearance.  2)  Bill wants to apply for a grant from the Adirondack Community Trust . The grants are about $600 and may be used for anything that improves the community or involves education.  The Board would like to have a member responsible for writing grants.  Since no one in attendance volunteered, the discussion was tabled for next month.  3) Bill reported that Warren County Sheriffs will be on Schroon Lake Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays for 8 hours during the summer months.  Schroon Lake contracts with Warren County for the sheriffs’ service and Horicon is allocating additional funds for extra weekend patrols.  4) Jane asked board members to think about how to enhance the Adirondack Library as it is being used as a community center.

As there was no further business, the meeting was adjourned.  Our next meeting will Thursday, May 26th, 9:30 AM at the Adirondack Library.

Respectfully submitted,

Sally Paland, Secretary
