The ESSLA has grown significantly over the last couple of years. We now have over 428 members. The following is a listing of a few of our recent Activities:
- ESSLA has started a Milfoil Scout Program involving area landowners who inspect the water in front of their homes for the invasive weed Eurasian Water Milfoil (EWM). This has already resulted in the discovery of new milfoil sites. More info.
- ESSLA is forming a dive team to assist the lake manager in the removal of new sites of Eurasian Water Milfoil.
- ESSLA conducts the NYS Safe Boating Course in Adirondack and Brant Lake several times a season. More info.
- ESSLA participates in the Adopt -A-Highway program for a portion of East Shore Drive.
- ESSLA joined with Paul Smith’s College in monitoring the State Boat Launch on Schroon Lake to check boats that are launching for invasive weeds. We also educate boaters who come to our lake about these threats.
- ESSLA contributes to the fees for testing water samples that are used to monitor shoreline areas for pollutants.
- ESSLA contributes funds and provides volunteers to do deep and surface water sampling eight times each year for water quality testing. Test results are compiled and published annually by CSLAP (NYS Citizens Statewide Lake Assessment Program). More info.
- ESSLA participates in the SLWMP Steering Committee. It is comprised of representatives from the towns of Chester, Horicon and Schroon, the two lake associations, ESSLA and SLA as well as Warren and Essex County Soil and Water Districts. This committee was formed to help guide the implementations suggested in the Schroon Lake Watershed Management Plan which was completed in 2010.
- ESSLA members have been active in the control and removal of the terrestrial invasive weed Purple Loosestrife and are attempting to control a site of Chinese Bitter Sweet.
- ESSLA brought together and hosted the leaders of several area lake associations to form the Adirondack Lake Alliance (ALA) in order to better share information and resources. More info.
- ESSLA members maintain a presence at the regular Town of Horicon monthly meetings and hope to have an increasing influence there. More info.
- ESSLA sponsors various Fund Raising events and projects each year. These include a Spring Pasta Dinner and sale of Windshirts and Schroon Lake Maps. More info .
